Philadelphia April 26, 2006 The Pennsylvania House of Representatives today passed House Resolution 714, commemorating May 2, 2006 as "Edmund Bacon Day" in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Resolution, sponsored by Representative Mark Cohen of Philadelphia, was made to honor the accomplishments of Edmund N. Bacon, Philadelphia's renowned former director of city planning. Bacon passed away on October 14, 2005 at the age of 95. May 2nd was his birthday.
To celebrate Edmund Bacon Day, a public ceremony will be held at noon on May 2nd in Conversation Hall, Philadelphia City Hall Room 201. The ceremony is sponsored by The Ed Bacon Foundation, the City of Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia City Planning Commission. Expected attendees include public officials, staff of the City Planning Commission, and members of the Bacon family.
Gregory Heller, President of the Ed Bacon Foundation said, "Edmund Bacon Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate the life and legacy of a great Philadelphian. It is also a time for us to keep Bacon's legacy alive, and to recall his lifetime commitment to building a stronger city through visionary planning."
The Ed Bacon Foundation is a Philadelphia-based, non-profit organization, established in 2004 with the mission of preserving and strengthening the vision and legacy of Philadelphia's renowned city planner, Edmund N. Bacon.
